Description

This bookplate was donated by the office of Andrew Carnegie as part of a bookplate collection intended to honor Annie Louise Cary (1841-1921), who was born in Wayne and became a renowned concert and opera singer.

Carnegie (1835-1919) was an American industrialist and steel magnate who became a leading philanthropist, giving to many causes, among them public libraries.

The bookplate depicts a number of books and a lamp, with the text "Andrew Carnegie" and the motto "Let there be light."

The bookplate was enclosed in a letter to Wayne and Brooklyn, N.Y., resident Elizabeth Hyatt. She began the bookplate collection in honor of Cary and was involved in plans to build the the Cary Memorial Library, which was dedicated in 1939.
