Description

Annie Louise Cary (1841-1921), famed concert and opera singer, was born in Wayne, Maine. After studying music in Boston and Milan, Italy, she made her operatic debut in Denmark in 1868. When Verdi's opera Aida had its American premiere in 1873, she sang the role of Amneris, a role which brought her praise and renown, and for which she was long remembered. She also became the first American to sing a Wagnerian role, and found much success singing in Europe. The public library in Wayne, which was built in 1938, was named the Cary Memorial Library in her honor.
