Description
Artist Rockwell Kent spent five years, 1905-1910, on Monhegan Island painting the landscape. He also designed bookplates in his modernist style. The Latin quotation reads: "Ut studiis se literarum a mortalitate vindicet," translated as "See through literature the deliverance from mortality."
The bookplate is contained in the collection compiled over several decades by Elizabeth Hyatt in honor of Annie Louise Cary (1841-1921), world-famous opera and concert singer, who was born in Wayne. The Cary Memorial Library in Wayne was dedicated in 1939, and named in honor of the singer.
